In an intriguing turn of events, Lionel Messi’s shift from Barcelona to PSG has been legally approved, even as he has now officially become a member of Inter Miami.
While this might sound peculiar, the situation warrants a closer look, tracing back two years in time. In August 2021, attorney Juan Branco, representing the Penya Blaugrana of Lyon, raised objections concerning Messi’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
Branco initiated two distinct legal actions before the Paris Administrative Court. In one instance, he petitioned the French league (LFP) to invalidate Messi’s contract, while in the other, he criticized the National Management Control Directorate’s (DNCJ) decision not to take action against PSG.
The latter concern was linked to a ruling from June 2021, in which the DNCJ opted against imposing administrative measures on Paris Saint-Germain for their non-compliance with financial fair play regulations.
Ultimately, the Paris Administrative Court dismissed the case, thus endorsing the legitimacy of the transfer. The verdict clearly indicates that neither Barcelona contested the transfer nor instructed Branco to do so.
Interestingly, this ruling comes on the heels of Messi’s official move to Inter Miami. Throughout his tenure at PSG, Messi participated in 75 matches, scoring 32 goals, contributing 35 assists, and clinching three titles, including two league championships and one French Super Cup victory.
